Meet The Makers

Located on the banks of the Nenagh river in Ballyartella, County Tipperary, John Hanly & Co Ltd is a 5th generation owned family business weaving for over 128 years. Our designs reflect the rich and varied colours of the Irish countryside. Each piece that leaves our factory is carefully designed and made using the highest quality natural fibres such as cashmere, lambswool, merino wool and mohair, all sourced in a sustainable and ethical manner. Our electricity comes from renewable energy sources and predominately from our water turbine which runs on the Nenagh river.

Harris Tweed cloth - Clo Mor (Gaelic for ‘The Big Cloth’) – is the only fabric in the world that is governed by its own Act of Parliament. In the same way that champagne can only be produced within the champagne region of France Harris Tweed must be made from wool which has been spun, dyed and hand woven in the home of the weavers living in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland.

For more than 100 years, the skills used to create Harris Tweed have been passed down through generations. Today this beautiful material is used in cutting edge fashion and design around the world.

Baird McNutt’s brand heritage stretches back over 220 years to the Kellswater river of Antrim. With generations of know-how in traditional methods, we pride ourselves in producing the world's finest Irish Linen.

The Baird family business was founded in 1912 and the McNutt in the mid 1950s. In 1992 the two joined forces to establish Baird McNutt. The relationship brought together the Baird’s expertise in crafting premium quality fabrications and the McNutt’s unique and innovative design capabilities. This relationship has allowed Baird McNutt to establish its prestigious position as one of the finest linen mills in the world.

Our mill is now powered by 100% renewable electricity. The Northern Irish power supplier Power NI has certified our energy as rated Zero Emissions. We use ISO 14001 to regulate our Environmental Strategy. Being certified means we have demonstrated that our Environmental Management System (EMS) is in place, and is used in the running of every aspect of our process.
